  Eating Organic On A Budget

Eating organic may be healthier for you, but doing so can easily double your grocery bill. Shopping at specialty grocery stores can be expensive. The good news is that if you are willing to do some creative shopping and cooking you can still enjoy organic and specialty foods.

  • Do your research. Shop around and compare prices. You can buy organic food in a variety of places other than the expensive specialty stores, or the organic section in your grocery store. Farmers markets are often a budget friendly alternative.
  • Plan to go shopping. In order the get the produce you want you may have to go out of your way a little bit to cut down on the costs. If a cheap market is only open on Sundays, then make shopping on Sundays a priority.
  • Buy in bulk and freeze. Fresh produce is cheapest when in season. Buy a large amount of seasonal fruits and veggies and freeze them for use at a later date.
  • Grow your own produce. Take up gardening. It’s time consuming and requires patience but growing your own veggies can shave hundreds of dollars from your grocery budget over the course of a year.
  • Consider making things from scratch. You want to eat healthy bread? Consider buying all of the healthy ingredients in bulk and baking the bread yourself. Not only will you cut back on costs but your house will smell great as well!
  • Be flexible. Does your ketchup really need to be organic? Decide what you can and cannot live without. What is more important to you? Organic frozen entrees to take to work for lunch? Or organic baked potato chips to snack on when watching TV? Be practical and choose wisely.
